The eastern wolf (Canis lycaon), sometimes known as the Algonquin wolf, is native to the northeastern United States and southern Canada. There has been significant historical debate over the species’ status, since its genome shows substantial hybridisation with grey wolves and coyotes. However, recent taxonomic reviews indicate enough differences to warrant recognising them as their own species. Their diet consists primarily of beavers and deer, but also includes rabbits, elk, and similar prey. The species features prominently within indigenous folklore and tradition. Today, eastern wolves survive in only 3% of their original habitat in the United States.
